How to Spot & Avoid Online Work-From-Home & Earning Scams

The rapid expansion of mobile payments in India has unfortunately been accompanied by a surge in cyber fraudsters targeting students, job seekers, and part-time earners with deceptive "work-from-home" promises. Here is what you must know to safeguard your personal data and funds.

1. The "Prepaid Task / Telegram Recharge" Scam

This is currently the most prevalent fraud in India. Fraudsters reach out via WhatsApp or Telegram offering ₹50 to ₹100 for liking YouTube videos or rating Google Maps locations. After paying a small initial bonus to gain trust, they invite you to a "VIP task group" where you are asked to deposit ₹1,000 to "unlock" ₹1,500.

The Trap: Once you deposit larger sums (e.g. ₹10,000 to ₹50,000), the scammers freeze your dashboard and demand more money as "clearance fees" before disappearing completely.

Defense: Never deposit money into unknown UPI handles or crypto wallets under the pretext of earning high returns.

2. Fake Captcha Typing & Data Entry Security Deposits

Websites offering lucrative monthly salaries (like ₹25,000/month) for simple captcha typing or copy-pasting text usually charge a "refundable registration fee" or "software license fee" of ₹500 to ₹2,000.

The Reality: Captcha solving has zero commercial value at those rates. Once the registration fee is paid, the website deliberately marks all your submissions as "error-ridden" and refuses payout.

3. Phishing Links & Fake APK Downloads

Scammers distribute fake apps through unofficial WhatsApp links or suspicious APK download websites that mimic well-known payment apps. These malicious APKs can read incoming SMS messages and steal your UPI OTPs.
